Subclass 884/864 Parent visa requires a significant amount of evidence to satisfy the Australian Government that both the sponsor and applicant meet all criteria of this visa.
To support you in understanding legislative requirements, we have developed two comprehensive checklists of documents (one for sponsor and one for visa applicant) that you will be asked to provide:
There are two stages to the contributory aged parent visa – the subclass 884 (temporary) stage and the subclass 864 (permanent) stage.
Stage 1: Temporary contributory aged parent visa (subclass 884) - Before applying for the subclass 864 permanent contributory parent visa, parents must apply for the temporary contributory parent visa (subclass 884). The applicant must be in Australia at time of application.
Stage 2: Permanent contributory aged parent visa (subclass 864) - Once a parent is granted the subclass 884 visa, they may be eligible to apply for the Permanent Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864). The applicant must be in Australia when they apply for this visa and as the name suggests, obtaining the visa grants the applicant to stay in Australia permanently.
AML is here to guide you along your journey at whatever stage you’re at. To ensure you have the best chance of success, reach out to us for a consultation.
Once the subclass 864 visa is granted, the visa holder will become an Australian Permanent resident. You can either stay as a Permanent resident or apply for Australian citizenship if you are eligible.
If you decide to stay as a permanent resident, remember to apply for a Resident Return Visa (subclass 155) every 5 years to travel internationally.
To become an Australian citizen is a choice, however it does come with some benefits such as access to Australian public sector employment and avoiding visa cancellations. More benefits include:

There is no fee to sponsor an applicant. However, sponsors must ensure their financial responsibilities to support the applicant in their first 2 years in Australia.
As of 1 July 2023, subclass 884 (temporary) visa costs $33,895 which is divided into two installments:
The Department fee of subclass 864 (permanent) visa is currently $48,365, also divided into two installments:

As we guide you through the process, the Australian Migration Lawyers team will keep you updated on the expected timeframe of the Department of Home Affairs (as they can change). At this point in time, both subclass 884 and subclass 864 visa applications may take at least 12 years to process. The long processing time is due to the demand for this visa being greater than the number of places available each year. The processing times will vary depending on the completeness and complexity of each case. Applications will take longer if you do not fill in your application correctly, include all required or outstanding documents, or your information takes a long time to verify.
There are two main stages in assessing subclass 884/864 visa applications. The first is when the the Department will check your eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it. The second stage comes if the application is added to the queue, the Department will continue assessing the application and when a place becomes available and makes a decision.
Please note that obtaining a Parent visa grant is not guaranteed, as the Department of Home Affairs has discretion to either grant or refuse visas. We remain dedicated to providing you with ongoing support and guidance throughout the process.
Here at AML, we strive to ensure we are accessible to our clients when they need. We do this a few ways including:
