What is a visitor visa (600)?

A visitor visa (subclass 600) allows individuals to visit Australia for tourism, business or family purposes. This visa is designed for short-term stays, typically up to three, six or twelve months, depending on the applicant’s circumstances and the purpose of their visit. Applications must demonstrate their intent to visit Australia temporarily and must have sufficient funds to cover their stay. They must also show they have strong ties to their home country, such as a job, family, or property, which indicate their intention to return. The visitor visa does not permit the holder to work in Australia, although certain conditions may allow for short-term study. The visa application process involves providing evidence of the visit’s purpose, financial capacity, and adherence to Australia’s visa requirements.

Types of visitor visa streams in Australia

Australia offers several streams under the visitor visa (subclass 600), each tailored to specific purposes of visitation:

  • Tourist Stream (apply outside Australia): For individuals who want to visit Australia as a tourist, go on a cruise or visit family and friends. A stay of 3, 6 or 12 months may be granted. You can apply both outside of Australia and within Australia.
  • Business Visitor Stream: For individuals coming to Australia for short-term business activities, such as attending meetings, conferences or negotiations. This stream does not allow for ongoing employment of extensive business dealings. You must be outside of Australia to apply and can be permitted to stay for up to 3 months.
  • Frequent Traveller Stream: For citizens of the People’s Republic of China who travel often to Australia for business or personal reasons. These visas can be granted for a validity period of up to 10 years and permit stays up to 3 months each time you enter.
  • Sponsored Family Stream: For individuals visiting family members who are Australian citizens or permanent residents. This stream requires a sponsor who must be an eligible Australian resident.

Approved Destination Status Stream: For citizens from certain areas of China visiting Australia as part of a tour organised by an approved travel agency. This stream is designed to encourage tourism and is valid for short-term stays.

Benefits of a visitor visa

The Visitor Visa (subclass 600) offers a range of valuable benefits for those looking to visit Australia. Unlike work or student visas, the visitor visa is designed specifically for those seeking temporary status for tourism, family visits or short-term business activities. Its benefits include:

  • Flexibility: The visitor visa (subclass 600) allows for various types of visits, such as tourism, family reunions and business activities
  • Extended Stay: Visas may be granted for up to 12 months, depending on your purpose and circumstances
  • Family Connection: Allows families to spend extended periods of time with one another
  • Business Opportunities: Permits short-term business activities like meetings and conferences

While on a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) in Australia, visa holders must adhere to several conditions, including:

  • No Work (8101): You cannot work on a visitor visa. If you are on the frequent traveller stream and business visitor stream you can undertake business visitor activities.
  • No Study (8201): While in Australia, you must not engage, for more than 3 months, in any studies or training.
  • No Further Stay (8503): While you are in Australia, you are unable to make a valid visa application for any new substantive visa other than a protection visa.

Exit Before Visa Expiry (8531): Must leave before visa expiry: The holder must not remain in Australia after the end of the period of stay permitted by the visa.

The various streams of visitor visas have differing visa conditions. Other visa condition examples are:

  • Maintain adequate health insurance (8501): You must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia
  • Limited activities (8115): the holder must not work in Australia other than by engaging in a business visitor activity

The frequent traveller stream is subject to heavier conditions than other visa streams and we recommend visiting the Department of Home Affairs website to ensure you are aware of the required conditions while in Australia.

How long can I stay in Australia on a visitor visa?

The length of time you can stay in Australia on a visitor visa (subclass 600) varies depending on the stream you apply through. These grants vary from 3, 6, 12 months to 10 years.

What does the visitor visa let you do in Australia?

A visitor visa (subclass 600) lets you travel, visit family and friends, undertake short-term business activities and complete short-term study. A visitor visa does not permit employment or long-term study; if these are your main reasons for travelling to Australia, a different visa may be more appropriate.

Are there travel restrictions on the visitor visa?

Your visa grant letter will indicate whether you have multiple entry or single entry. If you have multiple entry, you can travel outside Australia and return while your visa is valid. If you have single entry and you leave Australia, you have to apply for another visa to return.

Can I extend my visitor visa in Australia?

You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. You must apply for another visa in Australia. You can apply for a new visa if your current visa does not have a specific condition such as 8503 - No Further Stay.
