As of 1 July 2023, subclass 884 (temporary) visa costs $33,895 which is divided into two installments:

  • $4,765 must be paid at the time of lodgement, and
  • $29,130 is payable before the visa grant.

The Department fee of subclass 864 (permanent) visa is currently $48,365, also divided into two installments:

Visa processing times

As we guide you through the process, the Australian Migration Lawyers team will keep you updated on the expected timeframe of the Department of Home Affairs (as they can change). At this point in time, both subclass 884 and subclass 864 visa applications may take at least 12 years to process.  The long processing time is due to the demand for this visa being greater than the number of places available each year. The processing times will vary depending on the completeness and complexity of each case. Applications will take longer if you do not fill in your application correctly, include all required or outstanding documents, or your information takes a long time to verify.

There are two main stages in assessing subclass 884/864 visa applications. The first is when the the Department will check your eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it. The second stage comes if the application is added to the queue, the Department will continue assessing the application and when a place becomes available and makes a decision.

Please note that obtaining a Parent visa grant is not guaranteed, as the Department of Home Affairs has discretion to either grant or refuse visas. We remain dedicated to providing you with ongoing support and guidance throughout the process.

Frequently asked questions

Read our most commonly asked questions about the subclass 884/864 Contributory Aged Parent visas.

When can I access Medicare?

Subclass 884 visa holders are not eligible for Medicare as subclass 884 is a temporary parent visa. If you hold a subclass 864 visa, you will become an Australian permanent resident and thus be able to access Medicare.

Moreover, if you have applied for subclass 864 and previously held a temporary contributory visa (subclass 173/884), you may be eligible to enroll in Medicare.  If you are unsure whether you are entitled to Medicare, we recommend you contacting Medicare to verify your eligibility. Also, our legal team is here to provide any information and support you need.

How can I know when my subclass 884 visa expires? Can I reapply this visa subclass?

Subclass 884 visa is a temporary visa that allows you to stay in Australia for 2 years. The visa period starts on the date your visa is granted. You cannot stay in Australia longer by extending or reapplying for this visa.

There are many other parent visa options available to help you stay longer in Australia. Our lawyers can help to clear your concern and give the best advice for your circumstance.

What is the difference between subclass 143 and subclass 864?

Although subclass 143 and subclass 864 are both permanent Parent visas, subclass 864 visa can only be applied by parents who reach Australian pension age (at least 67 years of age) and must be onshore at the time of lodging application.

Can I bring my family member to Australia with a subclass 884/864 visa?

Yes, you can. Subclass 884/864 allows the main applicant to bring their spouse, de facto partner, main applicant’s child, or partner’s child to Australia by including them in the application. However, they also have to meet health and character requirements set out by the Department.

I am on my visitor visa. If I apply for subclass 864 permanent parent visa, how can I stay lawfully in Australia?

If your current visa does not have ‘No further stay’ condition, you can apply for a subclass 864 Contributory Aged Parent (permanent) visa and will be granted a bridging visa while waiting for the outcome. If you are unsure about your current visa conditions, please contact us to get a detailed explanation.
